Semen Collections

Vaccination and Microchip package:
Ensure that all your puppies and kittens are vaccinated and identified with a microchip. All puppies and kittens receive a full health exam with a health certificate to provide to new owner certifying the health of the animal at time of vaccination. Priced to assist breeders with the cost of vaccinating multiple litters.
Breed Screening:
Dr Richard Woolley, visiting cardiac specialist, conducts regular cardiac breed screening visits throughout the year. There are two options available:
1. Breed Screening Cardiac Ultrasounds:
This is 2-dimensional echocardiography which allows a visualisation of a “slice” through the heart in real-time. This is then compared with normal values for the breed and size of the dog. Severe CHD, MVD, or DCM are able to be diagnosed through this technique.
2. Heart certification by auscultation, $65.00:
The specialist will listen to your dog’s heart with a stethoscope, as an essential part of examining your dog’s heart and circulation. Any heart murmurs are identified, timed, localised and graded (graded 0 – 6).

Tubal Ligation:
Our vets are trained in performing tubal ligations in puppies. This means that they can be sterilised at a young age to prevent unplanned pregnancies, and breeders can sell the puppies with peace of mind, knowing the puppies they place in pet homes will not be bred from. This procedure can be safer than early desexing in larger breeds, as the puppy still has her hormones to use to continue growing. It is important to note that these puppies will still require desexing when they are old enough, as this procedure does not lower their risk of hormone driven cancers or pyometra, as the ovaries and uterus is still intact. These puppies will still have normal cycles, but will not fall pregnant.
Vasectomy:
Similarly to tubal ligations, vasectomies are used to sterilise young male puppies without removing their source of hormones. Again, this does not prevent hormone fuelled behaviours, but will prevent unwanted pregnancies. As for tubal ligations, we would still strongly recommend that these dogs be castrated when they are old enough, to reduce the risk of hormone driven cancers, behavioural problems and other health issues.

The majority of all semen processing (collection, freezing/thawing) is performed by Dr Chris Girling. In the event that there are issues with sperm quality identified, we have a dietary supplement from ICSB that has been used with success to improve semen quality.
